An unusual native plant with long, narrow and serrated leaves. Stratiotes like to have their roots in contact with the soil or mulm on the base of the pond. Most ponds containing Stratiotes seem to have clear water. Allow to die back naturally. The old plant rots away and the young plants rise to the surface the following spring to bear small white flowers and start the cylcle all over again.
Pond Planet Floating Plant Guide:
Only native floating plants are truly hardy whilst tropical species add variety to the pond during the summer months. Floating pond plants provide shade to the water and help remove nitrates, which aids in the reduction of algae and increases biodiversity.
